Horror Movie Review - Mr. Crocket 2024

“Mr. Crocket,” watch it on HuraWatch TV, offers a unique Halloween experience, drawing inspiration from the realm of children’s television of the 1980s and ‘90s to create a distinctively eerie atmosphere for the season. Co-writer and director Brandon Espy envisions a darker interpretation of these nostalgic VHS memories, aiming to transform their innocence into something sinister, complete with a rich backstory. The film features notable elements such as puppetry, animation, and moments of gore, highlighted by a chilling performance from Elvis Nolasco in the title role, which adds depth to the narrative. However, the film struggles with pacing and plot development, losing momentum around the midpoint, resulting in a sporadic engagement that leaves audiences with an incomplete grasp of its themes surrounding VCR-driven horror and parenting challenges. The story follows Summer, who is navigating life after the loss of her husband, Jerrel, while raising their young son, Major, alone. As a single mother, she faces numerous challenges, including work, household responsibilities, and Major’s behavioral difficulties, which only add to her stress. When a book-sharing box appears nearby, Summer discovers “Mr. Crocket’s World,” a VHS tape that promises valuable life lessons and vibrant characters. Major quickly becomes captivated by the show, but his behavior begins to shift in ways that Summer cannot comprehend. Unbeknownst to her, Mr. Crocket, the seemingly cheerful television host, is actually preying on families in distress, gathering children to populate his sinister realm. In her quest to find Mr. Crocket, Summer partners with Rhonda and Eddie, two other parents who have also lost children, uncovering the dark truths behind his intentions and the fate of the children he collects.
