The debate over how the Marvel Cinematic Universe will portray Peter Parker/Spider-Man has been interesting. Since his introduction by Tony Stark in Captain America: Civil War, his subsequent appearances have looked like Spider-Man trying to impress his iron master. Even in Stark's solo movies, many of Peter's inner conflicts and famous villain motivations are tied to Stark. The MCU Spider-Man movies benefited from Holland's acting and the fact that Peter Parker actually acted like a teenager. Still, it was frustrating to see how little influence Peter and his enemies had in shaping their own stories outside of Stark. The Disney+ animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man takes a new tack on this debate, going back to the roots of why Peter Parker is Spider-Man. It's a fascinating series, but it's better to listen to it than to watch it. We'll explain why later. We know the basics of the story: Peter Parker, a genius scientist from Queens, lives with his Aunt May after the death of his Uncle Ben. On his first day of freshman year at Midtown High, when Peter makes his first friend, Nico Minoru, a gothic horror enthusiast, an interdimensional battle breaks out on campus between Dr. Drew and Peter Brown, strange, symbiotic beings.
Pete steps in to protect his new friend, but is then bitten by an interdimensional spider. We'll find out the rest, as the show begins a few months later. Peter is already integrated into the community as Spider-Man, saving the world from petty criminals. As Civil War depicts the same events, Oscorp's fake billionaire Norman Osborn appears at Parker's doorstep. He offers Parker an internship at Oscorp, but later finds out he is Spider-Man and offers to take care of him. This is not the only change to the status quo, as his circle of friends in Midtown does not include Ned or MJ. However, the alternate characters from Spider-Verse here are more fascinating. The most prominent character is football quarterback Ronnie Lincoln. Peter initially believes him to be just a typical athlete and is jealous that he is dating his true love, the good-natured Pearl Pangan. His expectations are soon subverted as the two share the same passion for science and develop a genuine, warm, and well-written relationship. There is more to Lincoln than meets the eye, and showrunner Jeff Trammell and his writing team craft a John Singleton-style tragic tale for Lincoln, who joins a Harlem gang to protect his brother. The authors deftly interweave his and Peter's double lives and juxtapose their rise to power, achieving a remarkable payoff. Watch all episodes on Hura Watch Movies.
